Art Opening at Sticks and Bricks: 9 Market Street, Northampton, MA
In the heart of the Connecticut River lies the Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary. Arcadia is a stunning nature preserve spreading 766 acres that consists of forest, meadows, marsh, and wetlands. In this area workers and volunteers work to maintain and encourage birds to live and breed. Visitors can walk five miles of trails and look for hundreds of different creatures, from the black bear to the Great Blue Heron. I chose to begin drawing and painting some of the birds that live and visit Arcadia as a mural proposal in Easthampton.
The studying of our local avian species peaked my curiosity of the biodiversity of the valley and imparted a better perspective of how important it is to protect what we have. Especially in this time of the catastrophe of the BP oil spill in the Gulf, it is important to honor the creatures that thrive in our area. This project is also in hopes to further encourage people to take note the abundance of different species and nurture a curiosity for individuals to explore the Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary.
